Scientist Who Helped Land Spacecraft On Comet Returns Home On Mission To Inspire « CBS Los Angeles

PASADENA (CBSLA.com) — A Southern California scientist was back home Tuesday night after working on one of the most daring space missions of all time.
Claudia Alexander is a scientist on the Rosetta Project, in which a spacecraft the size of a washing machine recently landed on a comet hurling through space at 84,000 mph.
Working on the mission led by the European Space Agency, Alexander was with her counterparts in Europe last week when Rosetta’s lander, Philae, touched down on the 2-and-a-half mile-wide comet.
Speaking to CBS2’s Peter Daut at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, she said she’s waited 15 years for this moment, and hopes her work inspires others.
“There were so many things that could go wrong,” she said.
“It’s awesome that it did this leap, and then another leap without breaking.”
Philae nevertheless landed in an area where solar panels cannot absorb enough sunlight to keep going.
It’s now in idle mode, and it could be several months before it finds enough sunlight to continue.
“This is like your cellphone is red and you don’t have a charger, and so you just are gonna wait,” she said.
The NASA scientist says being a woman and an African-American in a field predominantly white and male has not always been easy.
“There were times I was not taken seriously when I came in a room. I do remember one time I was mistaken for the secretary,” she recalled.
The 55-year-old hopes to inspire people of all backgrounds to follow their dreams, while she continues to dream of what Rosetta will uncover.
“We don’t even know what point we want to make about the origin of the solar system. We’re trying to gather those bits of evidence that start to paint a picture of the birth scene,” she said.
Alexander plans to stay with the Rosetta mission for at least another year. In the meantime, she’s written several children’s books to help kids get interested in science.

One Charleston: Where Do We Go From Here? by William Dudley Gregorie

One Charleston: Where Do We Go From Here?

“Mother” Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church is my church. It is where I was christened as a child, and it is where I learned many of the values I take with me daily on this life’s journey.

Those principles of perseverance, kindness to others, respect, Godliness, and leadership were all kindled and nurtured within the hallowed walls of her sanctuary. It is there that I learned the resolve that has allowed us all to deal with the tragic events of June 17, 2015, with grace, love, and forgiveness.

It is with this spirit of resolve and leadership, that I feel compelled to write this to you.

We will eventually heal, but we will never be the same.

I am a trustee at Emanuel. It is a role that I cherish and one that I feel that I must work at daily to fulfill my appointed duties. As a trustee and life-long member of Mother Emanuel, I want to thank you for the kindness and love you have shown to our congregation. Everyone that offered a kind word or simple, heartfelt gesture, please know it did not go unnoticed, and it was right on time.

Mother Emmanuel has a history of overcoming tremendous adversity, and for over 200 years she has stood steadfast, her steeple serving as a beacon for those in need. She will once again stay true to her congregation and survive this terrible ordeal.

But she will never be the same. From the strength of her members, we can all learn some very important lessons.

We must come together, stay together and work together to show the world that we will once again prove that Charleston will be the standard-bearer as a city.

We are in our collective time of prayer that should never end. But as we pray and as we think, we must develop our plan. As this plan takes shape, we will develop policies to “protect our people.” Policies that will make sure this “City Works For Everyone.” Policies that will mean that we will stay forever united and focused on doing what is best for everyone, on every block, in every neighborhood, in every zip code of our city.

This is what the events of June 17 have shown us. That we can do all of these things. A people united as “One Charleston” is the most formidable force this state and country has seen. Out of tragedy we have found a light and a way. We must dedicate ourselves to ensuring this spirit of “One Charleston” remains intact and resolute.

So that the lives of the Emanuel Nine were not lost in vain, we must all see to it that this remains the reality for generations to come.

"They"

Im praying for the moments of enlightenment to by far outreach the despicable sadness and rage that human beings have towards each other.
It is frightening to consistently watch communities being "broken down" by those who have never set a foot inside them; concrete jungles, mountain valleys or coastal marshes.
There will be many who will NEVER be able to walk in the shoes of others.
I kept reading posts and the word "they" was being tossed around like used tissue.
I kept trying to figure out who "they" is/are.
"They" seems to be a heck of a description that covers a group of people regardless of their demographic breakdown..
It would seem that "they" are going through hell.. "they" are to be pitied, "they" are to be feared, "they", "they", "they"
All I could do was shake my head.. everyone seemed to have the answer... yet no one was going to where "they" lived and be with them in their conditions.
"They" .. I wonder who "they" are ... disenfranchised young and angry.. "they"
I pray others begin to take the time to listen... to hear... I pray they make it to adulthood and have some sense of self in the process to stick with life and become contributing members of society.
I pray "they" exercise their right to VOTE.. and work towards making a difference.
Unfortunately, there will always be a category of "they" .. that which others are not far removed from... yet "they" seemed to have forgotten that "they" themselves were once young, full of energy, gaining knowledge and spiritual strength yet requiring patience, care, concern, love and attention.
